  1. I love my E61 but all of a sudden I have a nasty bug. I’ve tried everything to fix it but it doesn’t correct itself. No matter what i try it doesn;t come out of OFFLINE mode. So basically it’s a PDA and not a cell phone.

Waiting for the Software Update to come out and i’m sure it’ll be fixed.

  2. Purchase:
I got my E61 two weeks ago and am hooked! This is really a powerful PDA. I got mine in Canada from PureMobile.ca. They had it delivered to my home in Vancouver 24 hours after I placed the order!

Before buying the E61, I had shortlisted the E61 and E70, but chose the E61 due to the larger screen and form factor - particularly the fact that data entry can be accomplished by using one hand. For this I sacrificed the camera and higher resolution which the E70 offers..

    Keyboard:
The keyboard is pretty easy to use, even though my thumb and fingers are pretty thick. I am able to type faster than any other cellphone or PDA I used before. BTW, puremobile ships the phone with English keyboard - no Chinese or Arabic stuff!

    Theme:
I am using the “OrangeBlue” theme and I feel it’s the least problematic of the themes I had downloaded.

    Problems:
Over the past two weeks I did not experience any serious problems. However, one one occasion it hung on heavy browsing using Wi-Fi. On another occasion it rebooted itself when I was sending an SMS message. The rest of the time I had no problem browsing or using SMS.

    PIM:
The built in PIM applications (calendar, addressbook) do their job well, but not as intuitive as I would have liked. I was using a Sony Clie PDA before which seemed to have a much cleaner interface. I am waiting for the much vaunted Papyrus PIM application for S60. The beta version should be out next week, according to this website: http://www.sbsh.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=11847&st=45 .

    Firmware:
I am also awaiting the updated firmware. It is rumored that the firmware update will be available for download through Nokia’s website: http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate . Currently they don’t have any software updates for the E61, but this website should work soon.

    Sound Quality:
Last but not least, the sound quality on this phone is very good.

Giorgos–> Believe me, I’ve tried everything. There are others with the same problem and they re-flashed their E61 using Pheonix and its too complicated. I have to wait for an update. :( Thanks anyway

  6. Have my Nokia E61 since 3 days and simply felt in love with it. The Vodafone skin is extremly stylish, the E61 is slink and fast and beautiful as hell.

I was a communicator fanboy for years but the E61 is far beyound great.

Get one if you dare ;)

  7. Hope you didn’t bought a (Vodafone) branded E61: that sucks big time. Your phone is worthless then…

  8. @giorgos

i feel very foine with the vodafone branding, maybe because this is my 6th vodafone branded item or so :) seems to be a matter of taste. the branded symbianOS gui is VERY slink and stylish.

  9. @schattenmann
That’s just the visual aspect. I was aiming more for the functional aspects (with all the restrictions Vodafone lays on you). Having a generic FW device is 100% allways better. We will see tomorrow, when Nokia releases the E61 update over Nokia Software Updater, if Vodafone is even present with a FW update for your device…

  10. It’s one week for me with my E61, I’m really like it compare to my
old panasonic x700 , E61’s OR is really faster than what’s in x700.
Everything works well for me, but i ‘m new with it , I try to connect
to wireless LAN which provided by my laptop but I can’t connect
( anyway , e61 found the network ). Anyone has some suggestions?
Another one point, the ADOBE acrobat reader LE which come with
the cell phone doen’t work well as i thought, I can’t open .pdf which
its size is larger than 2 MB. (it showns the error that the memoory is
not enough) . How can I fix this???

  12. Hello everyone!

Thank you for this nice forum on E61. Gotta be an addict soon! :)
I like the device very much. I had kernel panic on the first night when I copy-pasted my email address into the Worldmate. Since then I’ve learned it’s a known bug about to get fixed with the new (common Nokia!) firmware. :)
So far I’m very pleased to finally get a ‘yummy’ user interface, beautiful resolution display nicely viewable even in direct sun light, and many more things. I’m a bit disappointed there is no way to search the whole device (including doc, xls, and ppt files) and the file manager is way way way too weak.

Overall an amazing little (and light!) device with tons of technology packed inside.

    Cheers!

  13. Hi, again!

I would like to share with you, maybe some of you already heard about this little program, but for podcast users it’s a great software, iPod users could only wish to have this kind solution on their iPods. Nokia has a software Nokia Podcasting it works great on E61, full support unicode, download directly Podcasts to your mobile phone via GPRS/EDGE or WiFi, very nice application that I really like. Keep updates automaticly or manual on the podcast rss feed, so you don’t even have to worry about new podcasts will arrive automaticly to your phone if you wish! :) You could download it for free from here http://www.europe.nokia.com/A4160376

  14. I have got my E61 a week back. It is a great phone but I will like to highlight some drawbacks:
    - The joystick is not as some other nokia models like 6600 etc. Playing games like Sky force etc sjould be avoided.
    - The sound recording button on the left side is too sensitive ans starts recording when the phone is help in hand and not locked. I have heard the new firmaware will have a way to disable it, but don’t know when it will be available.
    - Not many softwares available for S60 v3.

  15. The E61 is the best phone i ever had. Its got a very powerfull WLAN service. I have a question for all the nokia ppl out there. In the olderversion of the s60, pressing the end key on the phone, puts the application in the background but keeps it running and you can access it again by pressing the menu key for 2 sec. In the E61, everytime i press the end key, the application exits and then has to be started again. Is this a newthing in the S60 or is it my phone. Please confirm and advise. thank you.

Harsh | 10:28 am on the 22nd of August, 2007

  16. Yes harsh,
i have the same problem in my E61 . The application ends and has to be restarted. I thought it was a new thing, but looks like other ppl have it too.maybe its just a lil problem we hav. Lets see what other nokia e61 users have to say on this.

Pauline | 12:42 pm on the 22nd of August, 2007

  17. @Harsh & Pauline: You can relax and enjoy your E61, because it is not a problem. Pressing the end key closes the current app on all Nokia models since S60 2nd edition Feature Pack 3. It’s just something we’ll have to get used to :(

  18. Hi all,

I’ve had my E61 for about 2 weeks now and it’s an awesome phone, but i have a few dislikes with it mainly to do with syncronization.

I have goodlink installed on it, and good works great, but there is no integration of contacts/calendar/notes etc.

With goodlink on a Treo you would only have 1 phonebook, 1 calendar etc. With the E61 you have 2, which is quite annoying, as one keeps things updated OTA and the other has to be sync’d with the software.

    This also affects CallerID/SMS’s.

If I were to use Blackberry connect would I still suffer the same problem? (I much prefer goodlink over blackberry’s email solutions).

    Thanks guys.

  19. I’m really loving my phone too but have a weird problem with downloading gmail via pop. I think the email app is working but I seem to get email intermittently. I do view gmail via the web, but I’ve done this while using pop clients before. Am I doing something wrong?

John | 9:10 am on the 22nd of August, 2007

  20. I’ve owned an E61 for about two months now (T-Mobile USA) and I have to say it is definitely one of the better phones I’ve owned.

    The bad:
Coming from a Blackberry 7290, this phone lacks big time in the e-mail and text messaging area. It lacks some very basic functions such as being able to read and/or ignore HTML formatted email. I recieve all my email via Blackberry Push and especially when reading eBay emails, all the HTML can make most mesages quite cryptic to read. The implimentation of Blackberry on any Symbian device is quite poor. I’ve also owned a Nokia 9300 Communicator which was marginally better with it’s Blackberry software.

The phone application, while quite good in being able to dial contacts and do voice recognition, cannot perform basic tasks like dialing letters. If I wanted to call 1-800-DRUIDIA, I would have to refer to another phone to see which letters correspond to what numbers on the keypad. The keys on the E61 which are dual-fuction as numbers do not list which letters they represent while dialing phone numbers. Every other keyboard phone i’ve owned has been able to perform this function.

While making or receiving a call, an annoying message pops up letting me know that packet data is either active or inactive. I DON’T CARE!!!!!!! I don’t need a message popping up and giving me an audible tone to let me know that my web session has been suspended while recieving a call!

The web browser does NOT support flash. This is a problem because the two year old Nokia 9300/9500 Communciators DO support upto Flash 6 i believe.

All of my gripes with this phone can EASILY be solved with a firmware update. So i’m not entirely worried about them in the long run. I’ve generally only kept a new phone for 4-6 months before switching to something else. Odds are, before Nokia/Symbian release a firmware update for this phone, I will have moved on to something else.

    Now onto the good stuff:

This phone is incredibly easy to use. Not quite as quick or agile as a Blackberry, but given the broad range of functions this phone can perform over a blackberry, I’d definitely say it’s a winner here. It’s many times faster than the two year old Nokia 9300 Communicator I was using previously.

The Symbian S60 v3 can be prettied up quite well also. Themes for this phone seem to be endless ranging from all-black to rainbow colored to aqua to white and everything inbetween.

The built in web browser is one of the best mobile web experiences I’ve ever had. And fast too. It can load just about any page I can throw at it, sans Flash pages. And it doesn’t throw away page formatting like some mobile browsers do. Being able to switch from EDGE to WiFi at the drop of a hat is also very handy when in a cafe that has free WiFi and I want to go online.

The 320×240 screen is incredibly bright and vivid. One of the best i’ve ever seen on any platform!

When paired with my Powerbook, I regularly achieve download rates of 30-40K/sec using T-Mobile EDGE on a $19.99 a month Blackberry plan. That alone makes this phone worthwhile. This phone served as backup to my Comcast high speed internet while the power was out for 18hrs a few weeks ago.

Battery life is also quite good. I can go 2 days with normal use, and upto 4 days with light use given I have decent signal.

I purchased a $45 Bluetooth GPS from eBay and this has turned this phone into one of the coolest toys ever. Essentially a $450 (phone, route 66, gps) fully featured navigation system that also has WiFi, EDGE data, Blackberry, mobile phone, and a capable MP3 player to boot.

Route 66 has got to be one of the greatest applications ever made. Having to give up the sat nav from my previous vehicle, I’ve been looking for a decent alternative for the times when I need directions, and this is it. Even the built in GPS software is exactly what I need when trail riding on my bike in the forest and rugged hills.

There’s a neverending supply of J2ME applications available to suit just about everyone. From Google Maps applications that allow you to pair it with GPS and see arial photos of wherever you’re driving, to games, productivity applications, etc. Because S60 v3 is so new, there is a shortage of native applications, but I don’t see this as a downfall. There are new apps every day.

I know I didn’t touch on every aspect of this phone, but there’s some features that I just don’t use and never will use. Calendar: i use iCal and a WebDAV server. Word/excel/powerpoint: I use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint…not a mobile equivalent…whatever it’s there for..i have no idea.

Hope someone finds this useful :)

  21. Hello

    Very nice blog, thanks.

After one week of intensive use I am very happy with the E61, besides :

    - The email key is very often becoming inactive , and needs a reboot.

    - Sometimes the cursor disapear on standby mode, nothing to travel around anymore, needs a reboot

    - battery level not working, suddenly empty battery

    - While pressing Email key, I need to wait a few seconds for a prompt in order to establish a connection and then to answer this question . No “direct” way ?

    - automatic e-mail retrieval not less than every 30 min, why not a user defined mode ?

    Have a good day.

  25. Thought I’d add my $0.02…

Brad Lay - I also use Good. And, don’t care much for it. Many things are implemented well, but as you mention, it simply doesn’t integrate with the platform. I also used it on a Windows Mobile device with the same problems. Fortunately, I’ve never had to use a treo, so can’t say how it is there. It’s highly frustrating. Also, I wish good would implement a simple POP mail add-in, realizing that most corporate users have personal lives.

Just started using Profimail for GMail access. Love it. Though, Good has spoiled me with their keyboard shortcuts. Profimail uses the screen space better though. I’m a huge fan of small fonts and packing stuff into the display.

Which brings me to my second complaint. No today screen equivalent to windows mobile. I want everything in one place, as configurable as I want it to be. Not there yet. I’ve read that future versions of the OS will have something. So, I’m anxiously awaiting.

Someone above by the way, mentioned Papyrus - excellent product. Loved it on Windows mobile, unfortunately, with Good, you can’t use the Papyrus calendar syncing with outlook via Good. And, I need over the air access as I’m highly mobile. By the way, the makers of Papyrus (name slips my mind right now) have excellent support and seem to be nice guys.

Though I’ve never heard anyone else mention it. Low volume on the speaker. Whether I use the loudspeaker or the regular hold-it-to-my-head method, I always have it on highest and have trouble hearing. My girlfriend has a cheapo fone that I can hear across the room when she puts it on speaker. I’m very jealous.

Oh, and I agree that the way-too-sensitive voice recorder sucks. Would rather be able to customize that button.

I’ve also had random crashes and occassional delays hitting a button and waiting for a response, but after working with windows mobile for a while, a once-a-week crash is really a reminder that I need to reboot the device - something I had to do several times a day with WM.

OK, one more thing. I bought the Nokia Car kit. Mistake. After 10 minutes on the call, static starts so bad that it’s unusable. Since it works fine for 10 minutes, and then gets staticy, I can’t believe it would be feedback of having the microphone too close to the speaker (though I recently moved the mike, but have not yet had opportunity for a long phone call). I suspect it’s a software bug and being in the US, I’m SOL on solving that! Also, I purchased the car kit thinking it hooked into my stereo speakers, and almost cried when I found out it didn’t.

Can’t wait to try VoIP. Wish you could classify music vs. sounds as different things, so my whole MP3 library doesn’t show up when I want to set a reminder or email tone, and vice versa when I go to the MP3 player and just want to listen to music.

Wish it had a normal headset port, synced with mini-usb that provided power. Not having power on the sync cable - probably second biggest annoyance behind the missing today-screen.

Bottom line is, gripes above are valid and real. But, this phone is fantastic, I love it more every day. Wish I could code, as I would really customize some apps that I need for getting information when I move around. Can’t wait for more useful software, and software optimized for the big screen and full keyboard. I think Profimail’s problem is that they’re S60v3 generically - which I understand to be mostly phone-type devices with the E61 being the first full keyboard. Good, on the other hand, is specifically for the E61, so takes good (not great) advantage of the screen, and excellent advantage of keyboard shortcuts.

Oh, and who the hell thought a calculator app could be exciting!?!?!? Get Calcium if it’s the only app you install (slight exaggeration). You’ll be walking around all day looking for math to do. The UI should win a Nobel Peace Prize it’s that much of a stand-out.

  28. just wondering if anyone has a work around for the 60 second time limit on the inbuilt voice recorder. or perhaps a software that allows you to both choose compression rate, and safe on memory card. have tried total recall and psilock software, but neither cut the mustard. thanks

  30. Do you know, how to postpone a reminder for task? Normally, you can only dismiss oraz ignore it. When you ignore, it’ll come back in a minute. But I’d like to have a possibility to postpone it for 15min, 1 hour, 1 day and so on. Exactly like in WinMobile.

The lack of thos little feature forced me to use PDA with phone with WinMobile, but I’d like to come back to my Nokia e61.

Do you know, how to fix this?

  32. I have the proud user of a Nokia E 61 for the past year being especially pleased with the ease of connectivity to a range of wireless LAN where I have used TruVoip, Gizmo and Voxalot.

Without making any changes to my home wireless network settings I am now receiving the following error messages:

Internet: Server Not Found and/or Connection Failed (-19) and/or No Gateway Reply.

I am able to detect the wireless LAN and my laptop connects without any problem. I have read of similar problems with the Nokia E 61 but this has only recently occurred for me and I am wondering if it might be a problem with the phone itself or whether I should try to reinstall the Wireless from the beginning.

    Any advice would be welcomed?
