SETTING UP E61 FOR CHEAP INT’L CALLS
Hi there. Anyone who can guide me on how to set up my E61 to make cheap calls? I am not subscribed to 3G
1) How do i make use of GPRS to make cheap calls? Any software i have to download to my phone?
2) If I connect my E61 to my internet enabled PC @ bandwidth of approx 42kbps through the data cable, how do I make use of my E61 to make calls using the internet and not GPRS?

I’m not sure if they’re cheap but it uses VoIP and works fine with the Nokia E61. You can use your Wifi connection to make VoIP calls via them or other similar VoIP SIP providers in your country.

Ohh, forgot the important part — GPRS. Well, it works. But not very good last time I tried. GPRS is probably just not fast enough for voip. I’m in Sweden right now and if I dare to try out some 3G roaming ( quick way to drain your wallet ) I’ll tell you how it’s working with voip.

I tried Mino Wireless and the rates were cheaper thank skype and quality was good as well.I have not tried it on the e61 though..I had it on my moto e680

GPRS basically does not work - too slow. And unless you have unlimited use in terms of data transmission, GPRS will likely be more expensive than making the call.
If you like to make cheap call it is best you set-up a VoIP service, change the settings in your mobile, and simply make calls over WiFi (assuming you have a WiFi connection).

Update: I did try it with 3G today and I never got it to work. Not sure if it was due to bugs or due to bandwidth though (I got GPRS to work a long time ago but sound was like a call from Pluto).
Another VoIP question: Can anyone use Access Point Groups in the VoIP-settings after the big firmware update? I found I can’t and have to set up a whole profile for *every* WiFi-network I use. Thank god(s) you can create new ones based on older ones.

Some telcos delibrately block off VOIP ports on 3G, so SIP on 3G does not work.

Hi,
this is an easy way of setting up the Nokia E61 for making cheap international calls..VOIP using SIP.
Terrasip is what I use for it gives me an amazing rate of 0,055 € (~3,170 INR) per minute !! You have to use their super discount Call India tariff. They have similar tariffs for various countries too !
Here is how to configure your Nokia e61\e60 :
Go to Tools - Settings - Connection -SIP settings - Create the
following profile
Profile Name: terrasip
Service Profile: IETF
Default Access point: (your WLAN AP name)
Public user name: your SIP number@terrasip.net
Use Compression: No
Registration: ” Always ”
Use Security: No
Proxy Server: 193.47.84.4
Realm: 193.47.84.4
User Name: your terrasip SIP number
Password: [Your Terrasip password]
Allow loose routing: Yes
Transport Type: UDP
Port: 5060
Registrar Server: 193.47.84.4
Realm: 193.47.84.4
User Name: your terrasip SIP number
Password: [Your terrasip password]
Transport Type: UDP
Port: 5060
Then go to connection - Internet Tel. Settings -
Create a new profile for “terrasip”, name it “terrasip”
In Connectivity - Internet tel. - Preferred profile - Choose “Terrasip”
Voila you are done. You should see the internet phone icon over at the right corner of the phone.

Try subscribing to an excellent service provided by Truphone. They provide a SIP service utilising the WLAN facility. What is good is that you can use your existing contacts list with which to dial out. Details are at http://www.truphone.com

If you are based in the UK you can get an incredible service from aql (this is not spam, I am not associated with them).
I am working in the US at the moment, and got this set-up in 5 minutes. You get 30p worth of calls - which allowed me to call a UK landline for 30 minutes. Amazing.
They are offering a free lifetime service for the new e-series phones, just like the E61.

As far as I can tell the SIP settings only work as you describe. So, you need to specifically define the Access Points for each WLAN and then specifically attach the access point to a new SIP profile (or modify the SIP profile each time you move to a new WLAN).
As you say it is an easy step, but it would be good if this was “looked for” by the device.
As an addition to my previous post you can of course purchase further credit. The 30p credit was just to get me started.

Another suggestion for Voip providder: http://www.voipcheap.com . As the name says… its cheap! I haven’t actually used it, but i’ve used http://www.voipbuster.com, a sister company, and i’m very pleased. VoipCheap seems to be the same, but with cheaper prices, though i can’t guarantee.

I currently use http://www.truphone.com from Bangkok, Thailand to make calls to friends in the U.S. at no extra charge. I have it set up on my Nokia E61 handset so now I have a phone that works on both GSM and VoIP. It’s great! And free to call my family and friends back in the u.s.
Positives:
-Truphone has a clear connection (compared wtih skype and vonage which is usually a mix of morse code-like talking and hearing.)
-Truphone didn’t cost anything to set up and doesn’t cost me anything to make calls in the u.s.
-Truphone gives you a static phone number so your friends can call you.
Negatives:
-It’s a bit hard to set up (I had a friend help and I’d do a step by step here if only I could remember how to do the set up)
-Can’t choose your area code for the phone number assigned to you like you can on vonage.

It’s brilliant, you login to your skype account (and you do not need to be logged in at home) skype out works fine too. Lots of Symbian phones supported too.
