My message inbox does not reflect the new contact I added

I just bought a Nokia E61. I like it so much. I just have a problem updating my message inbox. Whenever I receive a text message from someone which is not in my contact list and then I update my contact list (i.e. add the number to the phone book), the message inbox does not update the sender. It still shows the number instead of the name of the sender in the inbox folder. Can you help me with this?

  1. The odd thing with this is that it works in the log (that is, the log updates the number to the name of the sender), but it doesn’t do it to Messaging. I don’t think there’s a way of doing this, but at least you can know that it will only happen once and you’ve not actually lost anything.

  2. Not only that, but I also have a bunch of contacts that will never be paired with the name when I call/get a call. Yes, I have tried all sorts of number formats: with or without , country code, prefixes etc. Still, some select contacts are still just numbers on my phone. Not even sure what I should call this bug… Anyone else who had this problem? Any solution?

I have a slight feeling the two problems are related. Some really buggy code in the number-lookup-code…

  3. Do you have already an entry in your contaclist with the same phone-number ? If that’s the case your e61 doesn’t know which name belongs to the phonenumber and will show the phonenumber instead.

  4. Dear Marco,
I had the same problem that you were facing. After a bit of research I realise that it only happen when you have 2 contact sharing the same phone number. The phone get confused to which contact to display when your phone ring that is why it only show the number. Just combine the contact with the same phone number into 1 and you will solve the problem

  5. I have found this behaviour too. If you do not have a contact saved and then you get a message from them their name does not show, this makes sense. Now, if you add them as a contact and go back to messages their name still does not show up, but it will for messages you receive from now on. The name must be cached somehow to prevent multiple phonebook lookups.

  6. This happens if you copy the SIM contacts to the phone memory (or vise versa) and either keep both SIM and phone memory in use or on some phones even if you select SIM only or phone memory only. In the first case select only one memory to be in use (theres no point in having both memory in use that im aware) or in the second case delete the contacts off one of the memory’s. THe reason this occcurs is as mentioned above, two contacts with the same phone number the phone cannot decide which name to use so defaults to the phone number.

  7. Kirk is right, I can confirm this too

  8. Yes, I find this problem is mildly disturbing… Some other related problem is when you change a contact’s name, the message in your inbox previously sent by this contact don’t get updated either. So the messages still use the old name.
So, I don’t think it’s a bug, but a design flaw. It saves the name or number of the sender with the message, not the identifier of the contact.
Maybe Barry is right, this is to prevent multiple phonebook lookups.

  10. I know, this thread is too old, but I will also comment it. To most of the posters: Please, read once again the problem, than answer. In this situation, nothing is connected with double or triple or x-le entires in PhoneBook on the telephone and/or SIM card. For some other situations – yes, but in this – NO.

I have Nokia 6120c (Symbian, S60 3rd edition platform, Feauture Pack 1, Firmware 5.11 – the latest) and I have the same problem. I will try to repeat steps which lead to problem:

    1. You DO NOT HAVE number +1234567890 number in your phone (and, yes, I’m sure I do not have this number in my phone, SIM card or anywhere else in my pocket)

    2. You recieve SMS from this number (some good looking lady wants to hang out with me ;)

    3. You read the message and save the number (no matter of way of saving it-pls do not bother with tips&tricks on this)
*** You notice the message recipient in Inbox is still shown in number, not in name***

    4. Version 1:You reply to message by direct reply.
*** You notice that your SMS is correctly show recip. name in Sent Messages***

    4. Version 2:You reply to message by creating new message and chosing the recip from the PhoneBook.
*** You notice that your SMS is correctly show recip. name in Sent Messages***

    4. Version 3:You reply to message by creating new message and typing +1234567890 in the recip field.
*** You notice that your SMS’s recip name is not shown, just number, in Sent Messages***

    5. You get new message from that number.
*** You notice message is correctly shown in Inbox***

”” Every message you are sending from Nokia PC Suite (even the latest, 7.0.8.2) is not correctly saved in Sent Messages.

Somehow, the message database, or whatever it is is, is not updating the fields in DB or in headers. What does this mean: You can try this (and I bet it will work like It works on my phone): Make sure you have at least one message from someone in your phonebook. Than open the PhoneBook, find that name and change it. Open the Inbox now and you will see that message sender field IS NOT updated.

This means: when you recieve message, it will be saved forever like that. No matter you are changing the name or last name or whatever you want of sender contact in PhoneBook.

Now, I saw somewhere that even N95 and many other models (and I bet all S60) have the same problem.

This is not bug! Bug is something else, but this isn’t. This is lack of feauture or badly implemented feauture or even compromise. Does anyone remember old good Nokia 3310. When you have many messages in your Inbox, it takes forever to open it. Why? Cose phone sync SMS sender every time with PhoneBook.

I am proud owner of several generations SE models. Even my older SE Z610i does this thing completly normal. No matter I have 500 messages in Inbox. It will update every message with currently senders name in PhoneBook (sometimes it takes 1/4 second to do that, but it do that).

Cose, I never had any problems with that, and I wanted to try ‘magic’ called S60 platform, I decided to buy this Nokia. Of course there are some pretty good things in this platform, but this thing about messages are freaking me completly!

I know, I have more than 700 messages in my boxes (Inbox + Sent Messages) and I know that syncing every time senders/recip names would make messaging really tough job, but engineers from Nokia can make one little program called Update me! which will update wrong fields in message boxes… And yes, I will wish this feauture in Nokia forums!

Sorry if my English is not good enough for you guys,
