Have found the Avail WLAN. This is my own wifi at home but can't seem to get browsing? No obvious instructions to follow. If I go to web in Menu it tries to connect via GPRS only. Any advice greatly apreciated. Tim

Even when I say "use WLAN in offline mode" it will shutdown the WLAN at some point. Solution?
-Dummy SIM card (this will activate all radios in the phone, cost between €5-€10)
-Get a €10 prepaid SIM card

regarding the original question:

yes you can set up a handset to just use a wireless lan with no sim card.
i have a spare e61 handset that i use in the house for SIP voip using my wlan.
set the wireless lan up as ou normally would in connection, wireless lan etc...it will still use it in offline mode.

FAO - Jack, re wireless lan:
to turn off wireless seeking go menu - settings - connection - wireless lan
then turn 'show availability' to 'never
far as im aware, it wont search for new wireless networks then.....but it shouldnt try to automatically connect anyway, using standard software...if you have some other hotspot finder software, you need to refer to the instructions for that software.

Let me guess: you want to use it as a mobile browser? its not that good for heavy browsing though- no flash, no tabs (unless with opera) but very usable..

You don't even have to do it "manually." If you start the phone without a SIM, you'll be asked whether you want to use WLAN in offline mode.
