In my case, after the phone notifies that the connection couldn't be established and header retrieval will be disabled, I can't get any messages at all. Interestingly enough, looking at the IMAP log, I see that the phone establishes a connection, lists contents of the Inbox and then replies with a failure notice.

After trying a number of things like a soft reset and monkeying with settings, found that recreating my email account is the quickest way to resolve. Takes about a minute to create a new account, delete the old one, subscribe to folders, have the phone connect, get the messages (I have it retrieving the last 30) and then keeps working dutifully for a few weeks until I have to spend another minute to fix it.

Not that big a deal, but it's an annoying bug nonetheless. Nokia needs to fix this if they want to compete with the BlackBerry (I used to use BlackBerrys, but switched because BlackBerry is a one trick pony and I want my phone to do turn-by-turn directions and run other apps).

Like everyone else I have the ‘auto retrieval disable’ problem on dropped carrier. However, this time when I tried to re-enable it, the phone says ‘E-mail notifications’ must be disabled to enable header retrieval’ and won’t let me turn it back on. I’ve never seen that before, and after 1/2 hour of searching I can’t find where that setting is…

Anybody seen/fixed this one?

Has anyone found a solution to this? I have been dealing with it since I got the phone always wondering why auto retrieval becomes disabled. I only just now realized the problem when I caught the brief error message. Has there been a fix for this from nokia?

thanks

My e61 has been doing this since day one. If it loses GPRS coverage for a bit, the GPRS indicator flag drops which causes the header diabled issue as well as having to power cycle the phone to get GPRS services back. I can't deal with this anymore. I've played with the GPRS/packet settings from "when needed" to "always available" but it still does not force the phone to lock the GPRS flag on. Once it goes down.. it's down for the count. So is this phone....A JASAM/Tytn and Ipaq 6900 series work perfect with the same sim in the same spot on my window. It may very well be a OS issue as the latter two are WM5. Yet .. I really doubt it as NO ONE could be expected to deal with this all the time.

Try mail2web which is a free push email service, which solves the header being disabled during no coverage!

I've found an even more annoying version of this. When I'm on GPRS with 5 bars everything works fine. However, when a call comes in, GPRS is disabled until the call ends. My auto-retrieval is set to 5 minutes and, if it tries to connect while I'm on a call, the header retrieval is disabled. ARGH!

Is there any way I can contact nokia directly about this? It's my most hated annoyance on the e61 and I'd love for them to address it in the next firmware.

I think it also has something to do with only being able to connect one program the the net at a time over a single connection. Like running an IM Java program and checking email at the same time may be a problem.
