Global calls at local cost

Hi Friends.

Since Pasha has so generously opened up this blog for participation let me be the first to thank him for his knowledgeable tips and tricks he’s shared here on this blog. I know, I have learned a lot, specifically that post about GizmoProject and how to get it to work via pbxes.org was an eye opener.

Now, I just got of the phone (E61) to Martin from Nimbuzz in the Netherlands. He was demonstrating the features of their software making a phone call to me.

I have to say the call quality was superb, better than a normal mobile phone call, there was no lag and the connection was stable. Overall I’m very impressed.

I heard about Nimbuzz on MobieCrunch a few weeks back where Oliver wrote it was “the next big thing”, a potential killer application.

Nimbuzz has an integrated IM chat function as well (MSN at the moment, Google Talk and others coming soon); and that’s what I initially downloaded it for. There was a sign up to beta test “Nimbuzz Voice” and I thought why not give it a try. A few hours later I got an email from Martin to try the enhanced client with “voice”. It is a Java client and they even customized an E61 version on the fly after I told them that I used this phone.

In talking to Martin I learned a little bit more about the vision of the company. These guys got big plans. This could be huge!

I recommend to anybody slightly interested in this to head over to Nimbuzz and check it out. Don’t forget to sign up for “Nimbuzz Voice”.

  1. Thought you guys might be interested to know that you can get Gizmo Project working perfectly behind NAT without the need for pbxes.org
Just follow exactly the instructions here http://bulletproof-incorporation.blogspot.com/2006/09/how-to-setup-sip-voip-on-nokia-e.html

The sound quality is however not top notch compared to other SIP providers out there (Wengo for instance sounds much better than Gizmo Proj – both tested on the E61).

BTW, solutions like Pbxes.org add an additional hop to your communications, which means that you will suffer from even more lag.

  2. We’ve just launched Nimbuzz 2nd release last week.

Nimbuzz voice is now out in the formal beta and is supported in 35 countries. Calls, Groupcalls, and of course chat and text. Connected to GTalk and MSN / Live Messenger.

Now you can call your buddies on GTalk and MSN straight from your mobile, and at local cost.

Coming weeks we will roll out connectivity to AIM, Yahoo and ICQ.

The E61 is running smooth with Nimbuzz as it did since day one.

    Check it out: http://www.nimbuzz.com

    Looking forward to your responses,

    Martin Smink
    co-Founder Nimbuzz
