e61 Voip SIP setup with pbxes and Gizmo

Today I want to describe a step by step guide on setting up VoiP features of your Nokia e61. Before using VOIP features of your phone please make sure you have setup your “WiFi” connection.

1. I choose “pbxes.com” it’s a German VOIP provider of free VOIP PBX what means that you can setup your personal Online Telephone Station.

PBXES.com

2. We need a “trunk” a gateway for making calls to ordinary phones worldwide. It will be “Gizmo Project”.

Gizmo Project

Now you need to register on both sites and create accounts on them just follow there guides it’s easy so I’m goning to pass this. Now after you created accounts lets setup everything up.

Pbxes.com Setup

1. Login to your “pbxes.com” account and goto “Extensions” -> “Add Extension” -> choose “SIP”.

1a. In “Extension Number” enter “100″.
1b. In “Display Name” enter “My e61 phone”.
1c. In “password” enter any password, let’s say “testing”.
1d. Press “Submit”.

2. Now goto “Trunks” -> choose “Add SIP Trunk”.

2c. In “Account - password” enter your “Gizmo Project” password.
2d. In “Account - SIP Server” enter “proxy01.sipphone.com”.
2e. Press “Submit”. That’s it other fields just leave as they are do not need to fill them in.

3. Now goto “incoming Calls”.
3a. In “regular hours” and in “after hours” select “Extension” and choose your extension, should be “100″ as we had it setup already.
3b. Hit “submit”.

4. Now goto “Inbound Routing” -> choose “Add Incoming Route”.

5a. In “Route Name” enter “sipgate”.
5b. In “Dial Patterns” enter “XX.” don’t forget a dot after XX.
5c. In Trunk Sequence select “SIP/sipphone”
5d. Hit “Submit”.

To verify ethat verything works goto “Status”.
1. Extension “100″ and Trunk “proxy01.sipphone.com” should be green. If they red you’ve done mistake somewhere.

PBXES Status

You are halfway done, now let’s setup e61 now with new VOIP SIP settings.

e61 Connection settings

1. On Nokia e61 goto “Tools” -> “Settings” -> “Connection” -> “SIP settings” -> hit options and choose “Add new” -> “Use default profile”.
1a. In “Profile name” enter “pbxes”.
1b. In “Service profile” choose “IETF”.
1c. In “Default access point” choose your connection. (it should be “WiFI” with GPRS I cannot guarantee quality).
1d. In “Public user name” enter “sip:yourPBXESusername-100@pbxes.org” (note. type your username you registered with PBXES).
1e. In “Use compression” select “NO”.
1f. In “Registration” select “Always ON” you may choose other later.
1g. In “Use security” select “No”.

2b. In “Realm” enter “pbxes.org”.
2c. In “User name” enter “sip:yourPBXESusername-100″ (note. please don’t forget to put minus “-” between extension and username).
2d. In “Password” enter the password you created for your extension in our case it is “testing”.
2e. In “Allow loosing routing” select “Yes”.

3d. In “Password” enter the password you created for your extension in our case it is “testing”.
3e. In Transport type choose “UDP”.
3f. In “Port” should be “5060″.

Now you almost done now quit and goto:
1. “Tools” -> “Settings” -> “Connection” -> “Internet tel. settings” -> hit options and choose “New profile”.
1a. In “Name” enter “pbxes”.
1b. In “SIP profiles” choose “pbxes”.

On the very right of your status bar on the phone you should see “phone icon with earth” to apear.

e61 Voip

Now you done to test your connection dial “*43″ hit “Options” chose “Call” -> “Internet call”.

Nokia e61 Internet call

You will here “Echo test”. As I know when you signup with “Gizmo” they give you Free 10 seconds so you my try to call someone on a landline use this combination when you dial “+(countrycode)(areacode)(phonenumber)” without “()”.

Well “pbxes.com” offer much more interesting features like redirecting your internet calls to your mobile phone when you out of WiFi coverage and like smart Rount selecting depending on where you call. The WEB service is based on well know Asterisk open source PBX.

If you got intrested on this topic let me know and I’ll continue to describe wonderful features of SIP VoiP.

  1. Hi,

Wow!! Amazing piece! I’m quite new to the world of SIP VoIP and found what you wrote very interesting! My E61 is only one+ week old and I’m in love with it. It’s definitely one of the most powerful gadgets I’ve purchased, especially when combined with an unlimited 3G data plan. :-)

Have you tried using it under 3G conditions? Is it laggy?

I would definitely love to read more about SIP VoIP. It will definitely help maximise the use of the E61!

    Thanks again. :)

    Best Regards,
    Andrew

  2. Andrew, thx for your warm comment, Actually here in Moscow, Russia we don’t have 3G available so our operators don’t support WCDMA it’s bad, so we can use VoiP only throu WiFi connection.

If you have WCDMA working for you then you can be sure to have a good connection over SIP.

I have tried Internet calling throu EDGE(GPRS) it’s chopy I must say the bandwidth is not enough, with WiFi it works awesome. ;)

  3. hello sir, thank you very much for this wonderful article. I get my E61 Monday and I will be the only person in California to have one. But, i do not understand one thing. How can i call other landline and mobile phones using this service?

Gary | 9:00 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  4. Gary, the thing you are talking about is called SIP Trunks, this strange words means a Service provider which provides access to landlines thru internet

This whole thing is called SIP to get more information of using SIP and VOIP functions, you may look here “What is VOIP” it describes all thing.

Pasha | 4:40 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  5. I believe, in step 2c and 3c, there will be no “sip:” in front of the username and extension number since I tried your post and get “registration failed”. Then, I remove “sip:” from the above steps, and now I can make and receive calls.

Thank you for the post, it is really very useful.

TT | 1:23 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  6. TT,

You are right!, this is not nessesary to enter “sip:” it will be entered automatically.

Pasha | 3:21 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  7. Pasha thanks so much for this article and the whole site. this phone is awsome and your site makes it possible to see its potential. i have followed your article word by word. setup everything accordingly. however at the end of the whole thing i do not get any phone icon with an earth in the cornet nor do i get any kind of sip connection. i have setup wifi and use it all the time but please help me figure out what may be happening. for example do we need to have a computer running and logged into gizmo and/or pbxes sites? do we need to setup wifi in any particular way? how can i troubleshoot this…your help is much appreciated.

broo | 7:16 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  8. To add to the last post my error message i get is:
“no WLAN coverage for making an internet call. Make a cellular call?”
and my wifi router is a WRT54G perhaps that’s the culprit here?

broo | 8:35 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  9. ok good news is that I restarted my e61 after installing another software, and now i have the icon appearing on the screen and the echo test worked well. perhaps there should be a line added to reboot the phone for the n00bs like me :) however any # i dial using the internet dial i get a message that reads “Address not in use!” The dialed #s are like this (but an actual US phone number) 0012225551212@217.195.32.11

broo | 9:37 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  10. Broo,

Try dialing in such a way (countrycode)(areacode)(phonenumber) like 1(222)555-1212

Pasha | 9:51 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  11. that is pretty much how i dial it. the USA country code is 001, then 3 digit area code, then 7 digit phone #. with a in front of it all. so 0012125551212
then i get the no address error, then when i look at the actual # that was dialed via call internet i see the @217… Ip address suffixed to the end of the dialed ph#.

Broo | 12:56 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  12. Thanks for a very useful post, however I cannot get it to work with my voipcheap.com account - has anyone done this successfully?

Stephen Kearon | 1:26 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  13. to Bro,
    Ok lets try this way:
Refer to section 5b. and put “.” instead of “XX.” Or you may try ” [1-689]X.” if this still doesn’t work try looking for a mistake you made somewhere in your settings…

To Stephen, those settings should be working for you, you just need to change

2b. to your username in voipcheap.com
2c. to your password in voipcheap.com
    2d. put “sip.voipcheap.com”

    That’s it.

Pasha | 1:50 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  14. Thanks Pasha I will try what u said….however i have come across many NOKiA related posts that mention the failure of the software due to lack of NAT traversal issuess…see the official letter i found on the Nokia site below…and perhaps this has something to do with the problem?
    ———

Dear Sir/Madam Thank you for contacting the Club Nokia Careline. I am writing regarding your enquiry about using a Nokia E-series phone for VOIP calls.

In the first phase, your Nokia device has been designed to be used with a SIP based VoIP server which resides on the same side of the firewall as the phone, for example inside company premises.

Mobile VoIP telephony is unique compared to the fixed VoIP telephony, because users expect to be able to use their mobile phones in multiple different spaces, such as in the office, at home or with a WLAN hotspot. Hence the VoIP phone call should be able to cross different kinds of firewalls on its way to the server. In order to be able to do this, a method called Network Address Translation (NAT) is needed to translate different IP addresses on different sides of the firewall. Your Nokia device does not currently support a technique to enable the crossing of the firewall (called NAT traversal).

Your Nokia device supports compatible enterprise voice solutions from Avaya and Cisco which operate inside the company firewall and hence do not require NAT traversal.

We are working on ways to enable the NAT traversal. Our current plan is to build support for the most common methods for NAT traversal, called STUN, TURN and ICE. STUN support is expected to become available during 2006, and TURN and ICE during 2007.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us again if you have any further questions.

    Yours faithfully

    Nokia Service Professional
    UK & Ireland Team
    Club Nokia Careline

———————————-and just for the record the official FAQ on the nokia website has this explained, pretty much the same thing in different words….

Q: Does my Nokia device support voice over IP (VoIP)?

    A:

Yes, your Nokia device support VoIP telephony based on the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). This means that the service has to be based on the same technology standard.
Please consult your VoIP service provider for more information about compatibility.

is there a fundamental sofware shortcoming/ flaw that makes most of the e61’s SIP clients fail?

PS what’s up with the “Sorry, you can only post a new comment once every 15 seconds. Slow down cowboy.” message ? it’s more like 1.5 HOURS not 15 seconds ;o)

bro | 2:45 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  15. Pasha:
This is incredible support, much better than I would have anticipated in sunny San Diego, CA

However, after completing the SIP settings, I get an error stating registration failed. I wonder where I am going wrong, I have followed the procedures precisely as you suggested, but without much luck. Can you tell me what I could be doing wrong? As a consequence, I do not get the earth with phone logo on there.

Also, is there any way to set my WiFi to search rather than have a fixed WiFi address in my settings?

Your response will be greatly appreaciated. Thank you.
    Santosh

Santosh | 2:52 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  16. I went back to pbxes and checked my setting on status. I saw the green light, and then the extension as well as trunk turned grey (the button was still green). Can you shed any light here? Do I need to have some credit on Gizmo project so Gizmo Project would allow me to call out?

Thanks for considering these comments, especially from someone who does not know much about VoIP

Santosh | 6:48 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  17. I followed your instructions but the phone icon with earth does not appear and when I try the echo test, it says service not available. I am using Wifi conection and can browse normally. Can you help me with this please.. Thanks

Ejaz | 12:10 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  18. Ejaz, try restarting your phone!

pashka | 12:14 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  19. to Ejaz and another poster before -
i had the same issue befoe, as i set up everything correctly but didn’t get the earth icon. what i did was simply connecting to my home WLAN once, like to a mailbox or something, then it seems to trigger the voip registration. as soon as i disconnect, i get the earth icon. dunno if this will help your situation, as i find rebooting the e61 just takes a bit too long. :p

    ps: i have problem dialing though… >

epanda | 4:12 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  20. I followed the instructions given very carefully but I get exactly the same shaded grey trunk as Santosh! And I also get a registration failed error. I dont see any VOIP icon either.

Pedro | 7:46 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  21. To everyone:

For those who get a voice play back saying “Address not in use!” you have a problem with a outgoing trunk on pbxes.org please check that you put a dot like this “.” on the end of your “Dial Patterns” in “Outbound Routing”. This is the common mistake.

For those who do not even see “earth icon” try rebooting you phone or make sure you have WLAN turned ON!

One more thing you should have some credit on your GizmoProject or what ever VOIP you choose to make landline calls.

You may monitor your connections at “Status” page on pbxes. And look throu logs on “Call monitor” page.

These settings work! even behind NAT and firewall! tested! So just make sure you haven’t done any mistake.

For others who still can’t manage to setup connection, you may e-mail me your login details for pbxes.org at “Contact me” page, i’ll try to set it up for you. If you trust me…

Otherwise try finding a bug in your settings if you do manage to find it please report it here so others can use this information to find a problem in there settings.

Pasha | 10:09 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  22. Pasha - tried my voip username and password with sip.voipcheap.com and it won’t work.

I have a linksys router and the same details work fine there.

The echo test etc works, no matter what I dial I get a “busy now” message

Have anyone got voipcheap.com to work for them with this setup?

Stephen Kearon | 11:21 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  23. BTW as a test I just created a gizmo project account and it works fine on my E61 - was able to dial out (00 353 404 12345)

Does the Busy Now message come from pbxes.com or voipcheap.com ?

Stephen Kearon | 11:34 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  24. Ok, finally someone had successfully set it up! I’m happy.

    to Stephen,

Now To make your voipcheap.com work you need to setup routes so pbxes can decide which service to use.

For now you may control “outbounding routes” with “Dial Patterns”. this parameters selects wich route to use. I will write a new article on this one tommorow.

Pasha | 12:01 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  25. Is it possible for this to work with skype?
I dont have any E61, but im going to buy one soon! seems nice!

Martin | 1:39 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  26. Martin,
VOIP and SIP is a bit different from Skype, to use Skype you may read this subject “Call Skype with your Nokia E61″.

Pasha | 1:46 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  27. Hello again,
I finally managed to make a phone call. Here is what I have found in my specific case.
    1) I dont know how, but I lost my account on pbxes, so I made a new one. With exactly the same settings. In the end in the status tab, I had a shaded grey icon on the trunks side, but when I tried to register it became normal, although the phone said failed to register!!!
    2) Then I made the echo test and it was fine. As soon as I dialed *43, I saw the internet call icon for the first time on the phone.
3)When I tried a normal landline phone, here in London I got the address not in use error. But when I changed the sign to 00, I managed to make the call with no problem.

I still need to find out if there is a lag or not in the sound, but it is midnight, so i dont dare to call anyone!

Pedro | 3:06 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  28. Hi, interesting article! There seems to be more and more VoIP related articles about the E60/E61/E70, which is a nice development.
I have a sipgate account (got it from sipgate.de) and they have a step by step guide on how to setup the E61 with their service, complete with screenshots, a bit like what you did. I just followed the guide and it worked.
I will now try to have the gizmo project account setup on the E61.
As sipgate.de also provide the x-lite software phone preconfigured with your sipgate.de account data, comparing the 2 setups (E61 screenshots and the x-lite config) should teach me how to set it up for gizmo, hopefully!
I wish gizmo project also published step by step guides like yours.
    Thanks

  29. Think I found the problem with voipcheap.com, in the pbxes.com forum found a mention that they block access from VoIP pabes!

Apparently it can work by using http://www.voxalot.com so am working on that now!

Stephen Kearon | 4:35 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  30. Stephen, thanks for finding a problem and letting other know about it!

Pasha | 5:51 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  31. Thank you very much for the excellent writeup, it works perfectly, amazing voice quality!.

All the people having “registration failed” issues despite following the above mentioned instructions, please make sure that your user name has the proper case, E61 will take the first letter of the word and make it uppercase by default, I didn’t notice it, until I went over all the settings when I got registration failed the first time.

    Good luck!

Pasha, thanks once agian for bringing us this excellent solution to the lack of NAT traversal in E61.

Syntro | 7:55 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  32. Hi! Pasha! Before doing it all first do u have to install gizmo in your E61? If yes, how? What version do u have to install? windows? mac? linux? or the N770? Thanks a lot.

Mike | 3:15 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  33. I finally got it working. Here is what I have done.

I changed from uppercase first letter to lowercase first letter.

When I was logging on to Gizmo project software on my computer (log in screen), at the bottom there are two checkboxes, one for remebering my username password, etc. and the second on for setting up the PBX. There is a hyperlink where I filled in the IP address 217:195:32:11 (without typing sip), my username (for PBXES account) password and then my GIZMO account was registered.

After this process, I was able to register from my phone without any problem (in fact, I automatically received a prompt that if I have traveled outside cellular area, the emergency calls will be made using internet phone; at this point, I was just shocked that the internet phone actually works on E61!!!!!!!

AMAZING, THANK PASHA FOR FANTASTIC WORK! Well done! I am on my way to make CHEAP calls without using my minutes.

Santosh | 7:22 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  34. Just a small correction
When I said changed from uppercase to lowercase, this was because I had set up my account with lowercase username. Please read the post by Syntro where he mentions to input your setup on the phone with more attention to case sensitivity.

I also forgot to express my gratitude to Syntro - Thank you Syntro, it possibly could be crucial clue in getting things to work.

Santosh | 7:28 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  35. One more observation

If I am logged on to my Gizmoproject account onmy computer, it does not allow my E61 to register to PBXES. When I log off from my account on my computer, it automatically registers my E61.

I guess it makes sense that you could not log on from two separate devices (computer and PBXES) simulteneously.

I hope these comments are helpful.

Santosh | 9:00 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  36. Ive got it to work!!!!!!!
I dont know how i dit it but i have tried for hours to just get an echo call!!! But now everythings work great! As I said, i dont know what i dit to succed, but the last thing i made before it worked was to forward the port 5060 in my router. could this have something to do with it?

another cuestion now,, is it posible to get an voicein landline phonenumber, so that my E61 rings when somebody dial that number? I live in sweden and, but it would also work with an other countrienumber as most of my friends call me from skypeout….

Thanks for a great site!! Which also made me a happy E61 user, as i bought the phone just after i saw this site, with posibilities =)

    Excuse my bad english :)

    Thanks again!!!

Martin | 11:34 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  37. Martin,

You can get a NorthAmerica number from Vbuzzer it’s like $2/month or you can get a UK number from voiptalk.org. With voiptalk.org you don’t even need pbxes.org.

Syntro | 2:00 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  38. I have found another problem. When I switch from home wireless network to work wireless network, (neither of them have corporate firewall) the registration fails. Then I tried to log on through my t-mobile hotspot account, it failed as well.
Is it the wireless setting which is getting screwed up? Can I use smart roaming as my default access point?

I got to it work on my home as well as work wireless netorks without a problem for a while. But now it is not working. I don’t unerstand what I am doing wrong and where is the instability is coming from.

Santosh | 2:15 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  39. Santosh,

I strongly suggest to use SmartRoaming for unstable connections…

btw, I’ve got your email will reply soon…

  40. “Your account bpbxes has been deleted. Best regards

    pbx@i-p-tel.com

WTF?????? They have also deleted my account mysteriously…

This email was sent to me 4 days ago. There is NO explanation why or how it was that they deleted my account. This is to second the other comment in this thread. Are these guys f’ed up or what? Is there a more stable company (free) who won’t just remove accounts randomly?

bro | 3:37 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  41. Hi Sasha,
I setup my account again on pbxes. hopefully it won’t be deleted again. I can make echo *43 calls and trunk/status looks good. i can see my call timerr count the seconds as i do the echo test and while i do the echo test the extenstions green light in the status section turns red and when i hang up it turns back to gree. however this problem just does NOT want to go away…the problem of getting “Address Not In Use.” error on any phone number that i dial. I am 110% positive everything is correct in pbxes.org.
I tried changing the “XX.” to just “.” (without the “s of course) and you CANNOT do that, it says “Route name must not be blank.” I also tried your sugestiosn of [1-5789]X. I also tried [1-9]X. (all with the .DOT at the end). Also tried other permutations and the damn thing keeps saying “Address Not in Use” on my phone. I have also purchased $10 on gizmo right before trying all this out. I am perplexed, please help crack this damn nut.

bro | 5:02 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  42. @Santosh

Maybe when you move from home to outside of home it stops working because you said you have added the checkbox for “Login to Asterisk, PBX, or other phone service” on the login window of the gizmo client. Perhaps you have done that on the home machine and it’s causing conflict when you’re not at home? Just my 2cents.

bro | 6:05 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  43. To bro

Hi, I had my account deleted twice on pbxes! I have no idea why too!! So I strongly recommend people that cannot register to check if they still have the pbxes account.

The address not in use error:
Have you tried “00″ instead of ” “? It worked with me, and I was able to make calls, until pbxes cancelled my account that is!

  44. I am having trouble registering. One time I got registered but the Echo test wasn’t working, after about a minute a timeout message appeared. On the same wlan I can connect with my laptop using X-lite on the same or another extention I am not trying to connect to the same extention with my E61 and my laptop at the same time. So my pbxes-account is correct.
On the Nokia I have done a full reset. Then setup wlan and setup the sip phone settings as above. After about a minute I get registration failed. Even after turning off and turning on, my phone keeps giving: registration failed.
    Anymore ideas?
It doesn’t matter if i put sip: in front of the usernames or not…

  45. I have tried everything that has been posted. I still can not seem to get it to work I can make calls on Gizmo I have all green lights in Pbxes but it is still not working.

I do not have the phone with the earth and everytime I dial *43 on the phone it states that I don have Internet Telephone service available.

I also have credit on my Gizmo account. I love my E61 but I would love to get this to work.

  46. Hi Pasha,

    Thanks for all the info.

I tried to follow your description for the E61 on my E70, but can unfortunately not get it to work (Registration failed). Are you aware of eventual differences in the software between the E61 and the E70, which could cause this? All the settings seems to be identical for the two phones!

Carsten | 12:27 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  47. Great information thanks!
I followed your instructions and it worked great! I had to go to the “Internet Telephone” menu item and select register then I got the world and phone symbol. It is pretty incredible that it works as I am Internet Connection Sharing from my TiBook to the E61 from a campus network riddled with firewalls! Gizmo Project running on the mac does not even work due to port issues.

Only problem I have is that once I disconnect/unregister from the Internet Telephone I have to restart the E61 before I can connect again. Any idea why this is? Is there a fix?
Also in the default access point item do I need to explicitly select an access point or will it search if the primary one is not found, I do not see the Smart
    Roaming item in the list.

    Thanks again
    Toby

Toby | 3:49 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  48. All the people having issues, first check if you can browse the net, then go over your setting very carefully, it does work.

Toby: you don’t have to turn your E61 On/Off, there is an issue with E61, if the WLAN signal is weak and the bit-error-rate shoots up for a while and then goes down without really getting disconnected from the WLAN, the SIP may get de-registered during this dead-time and registration will not take place on its own once the signal is good again. Rather than power-cycling the E61, just goto tools–> setting —> connection –> SIP settings –> “profile name” –> Registration –> when needed, then click back.. do the above steps again and then flip Registration –> Always On, then click on back.. it should register.

You can also create a shortcut of the internet tel. on your main screen and if you select a SIP profile to register when needed, you can force the registration on or off from the main screen.

    Hope the above helps

  49. Regarding the “Address not in Use” problem. I tried everything said on the various comments and the problem seems to have been the use of the ” ” sighn in front of the number being dialed. When I remove the and jus start with the 1… it doesn’t give this error, BUT a female voice comes in and says “please try your call later.” i think that is the message from Gizmo…so at least some progress, but still no luck. The only other worhty note to mention is that I can dial the Gizmo project test # this is VERY important for people who are 1/2 way there, another good way to test your settings besides the *43 is to dial this SIP test # which is: 1-747-474-3246

IF YOU CAN”T REGISTER YET>>>see these tips:
to everyone who can’t get the phone registered…
*reboot your phone after successfully completing Pasha’s guide
*you first have to make sure “Status” section works fine in pbxes site
*make sure you fully understand your WLAN setup on your e61
*make sure you have that four-leave WiFi clover (or star) in the corner
*make sure it is on the WiFi when u make the call, or at least that it works. *Make sure the WiFi you’re on is the same as the WiFi picked in Tools > Settings > Connections > Sip Settings > pbxes [or equivalnet service] > Default Access Point
    * double/triple check ALL the various passwords/logins….be sure you did not mixup the passwords for your pbxes login/pass with the pass chosen when you setup the account AFTER you logged into pbxes with the password of you gizmo
*make sure your pbxes account has not been deleted from pbxes.com, check your email they sent me an email after they removed my account.

if you ARE REGISTERED ….some more #s to test out your connection…

——————————and some more test #s for SIP setup:
some of these work from Gizmo client others from any sip phone….

  50. I contacted pbxes.com about why the DELETED my account and this is their response:

“We cleaned up all accounts that contained only “junk” entries as personal data. Please enter your full name and address. Otherwise we assume the account was just used for “testing” and can be deleted.

So if you got your account removed, next time write down non-junk entries when u setup your account.

  51. “Address Not in Use Error” in my case was fixed by removing the (plus) sign. I’ve tried to write this in a few comments but the plus sign gets omitted when i submit the comment. SO if you are dialing with pus sign in front of your number and (Plus 1(country)(area)(local phone)) and getting an “address not in use” error, then try dialing without the plus sign.

Bro | 6:01 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  52. Hi Guys,

Many thanks for the articles and efforts in connecting to VOIP. I have a few questions. I am based in Australia and conencted to a sipme (www.sipme.com.au) account to provide VOIP calls. I can browse the web fine from my E61. I have carefully setup the sipme account. I have opened up ports on my wireless network, as suggested by sipme.

Everytime I dial a number it says: No WLAN coverage for making internet call. I Have rebooted my phone and no changes. I do not see an earth logo in the corner, rather a square.

I took the E61 to Nokia today to get a software upgrade as I noticed the symbian site has version 9.3 of the software released. I am not sure what version they have applied, and not even sure how to check. I was hoping that I would get NAT (though unable even to get SIP working).

As a side issue, and totally off topic, has anyone managed to get Avantgo working? I try to install apps without success.

    Many thanks for any support…

  55. Works fine for me, but i spend AGES trying to get it work (like 4-5 hours). You just have to be very careful about what you type and sometimes you have to alter settings eg. delete sip before something etc…

val | 9:39 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  56. Bro,
I am having exact same problem as yours.. pbxes setup looks fine.. I have green lights on status page. My phone is registered. Also I tried dialing 1-747-474-3246 and I get the GIZMO recording. However, if I try to dial any other number I get a lady’s voice saying try again later. I checked my Gizmo account and see 25 cents credit so it should be sufficient to make atleast one call to US. Please let me know if you were able to resolve the issue.

Param | 1:51 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  57. Param,
Make sure that in pbxes your user account is your Gizmo Project telephone number without any dashes (-) between the numbers.

Dave | 2:12 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  58. @Param
I am trying but like you I can only dial a few test lines from that gizmo list of #s for example i can dial UC Irvine (University of California Irvine Campus 1-949-824-5414(Test))and actually interact with the phone operator/system. So it works, but i cannot dial other normal #s yet. I get the same “try your call later” female voice like yourself. I have $10 credit with gizmo so it’s not that. I have a feeling the gizmo setup needs tweaking either on the client or in the web preferences of our account perhaps. Havent’ figured out the tweak yet, will keep you posted and you do likewise please.
    thx

bro | 2:16 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  59. Dave,
the instructions say use your gizmo username, which is usually alphabetic which is what i used. are u saying to replace that with our SIP number?

bro | 2:29 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  60. btw Dave, i’m referring to this field: pbxes.com: Setup pbxes > Trunks > SIP / sipphone (Edit Sip Trunk) > Account > Username.

bro | 2:38 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  61. I am using alphabetic username also.

Param | 5:37 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  62. I still cannot get registered. First some extra information then I will give you screenshots of my E61 and pbxes to let you see what I have done. The only thing I will hide is the passord to the extension for my phone.
Extra info: I am able to register with voiptalk.org they apparently use some specific nat-traversel technique. Moreover they use TCP in stead of UDP. But I cannot make any calls with voiptalk, I can only receive calls.
Extra info2: I cannot control the wlan-router. I am at the University Club, which is some kind of dorm. Other people have setup the internet, router and accesspoints. I only know they use a Netgear Business Router, because that is what I see at the gateway’s website.
Ok now my steps to try to get the E61 registered. First (like on this page) pbxes.com. I have tried setting it up with a sip trunk, but for now I only setup the Extension, because I want to get registered and I want to be able to make an echo test call. I don’t need ring groups, trunks or routing for that.
A screenshot of my extension can be seen here: (I only blanked the password for the screenshot) http://www.caljouw.com/files/index.php?dir=jorik/E61-pbxes/
Then I configured pbxes in my E61. I have checked that Uclub is working as an accesspoint. I am trying to register when I am 1 meter away from the access point. You can see E61-screenshots of my SIP-setings at the same website as the pbxes-screenshot.
When I click Back after setting up, the Wlan-symbol comes up and after 3 minutes and 19 seconds (I used a stopwatch!) I get Registration failed.
I have tried a lot of different settings (with sip: in front or not) with hostname instead of ip address, etc. It is not registering. Voiptalk is registered within 2 seconds after pressing Back. And I can register with pbxes using X-ten on my laptop (on the same wlan), but X-ten is ofcourse a lot “smarter” than the SIP-client of the E61.
BTW. voiptalk has an underline under the profilename in the SIP settings menu, pbxes does not. Does anybody know what that means? Does a profile have an underline when it has succesfully registered at least once?
I have read all comments at least twice and tried all options for registering. I am (currently) without hope for my combination of this Firmware and this router at my place. If somebody has some other suggestions, I am very willing to try those. But I have really tried a lot. Since not all routers are alike, I think with some routers it will just not work with these settings…

  63. Hi BRO! I get the same problem too. I have set it all up. But then again I cant dial any international number, i haven’t connected to any number I dialed either. The lady always says “pls try again later” what can we do about this? :( Hope we can all resolve this problem soon. Thanks for this site.

Mike | 4:25 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  64. Jorik,
I think the underline tells you which connection is the default connection. You can change the default connection once you click on option.

Param | 7:04 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  65. Bro/Mike
Try changing the Registrar serv. addr. to “sip:pbx.i-p-tel.com” . Restart the phone after changing this. Once I changed the registrar address I can now dial all 800/888 toll free numbers. Still cannot dial a regular phone.

Param | 10:55 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  66. Finally I was able to get this to work. Here is the how…
Login to the Gizmo software on your computer and then click on edit >> My profile. You should be able to see your SIP number over there. Enter that SIP number without dashes (1747696XXXX) as the username for TRUNK in PBXES settings. Once I did that I can now make calls to regular telephone numbers. Hope it works for you as well.

Pasha thanks for the great write up you did on the subject.

Param | 12:47 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  67. Param,
Thanks the underline is indeed the default one. I didn’t notice the default option. I have now also tried to use the hostname as register address, still no luck. Also with proxy and register, it doesn’t work.
I sure hope the new software will give a better SIP-client, that can even punch through this router/firewall!

Jorik Caljouw | 2:37 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  68. YES VICTORY is at hand. thanks Pasha, Dave, Param. and hopefully this will work for everyone else. I basically stuck to EVERYTHING pasha said, EXCEPT the trunk gizmo username replacement. As mentioned before, i had to change my alphabetic gizmo username to its numeric SIP equivalent and save the profile in pbxes.com and afterwards everythign works. Registering the SIP is always a little pain in the butt but whenever i fail registration i go back in the connections settings and change “Always On” to “When Needed” and it just asks me to register when i dial. SO everything works. These settings from Pasha are ALL good with the exception of the PLUS sign in front of the dialed number and the SIP # of course.

thanks hope other folks get it working as well.

    Veni Vidi Vici !!!

    ;o)

Bro | 8:20 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  69. @Jorik
Try setting up once using all the info in Pasha’s guide, so just start a new set of accoounts/settings using pbxes.com and GizmoProject and see how that combination works. I do not believe the routers matters IF you can access the internet (e61’s WLAN) you should be able to setup SIP on that same router.

bro | 9:18 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  70. This is a great HowTo! It worked absolutely fine for me with two changes:
    a) as already mentioned the “sip:” has to be omitted for Proxy and Registration server
    b) ‘had some trouble with dialing out numbers. For me, it helped to modify the Dial Pattern like this: ” X.” (In case the posting looses the pluses: plus X dot ) This allowed me to dial numbers like 4921112345. This format works for normal GSM calls as well.

  73. Hi Pasha,

    Great HowTo - Thanks.

I have also managed to set this up with my E61.

Just to summarise the changes again for people

    (1) Used my numeric SIP username in pbxes.com under:
Setup PBX -> Trunks -> Add Trunk -> Account -> username

    (2) Didn’t enter “sip:” in the usernames for Proxy and Registration
server on the Phone (Phone Steps 2c and 3c).

    (3) When dialing numbers use “00″ instead of ““” (plus)
So to dial the US use 001….. and Ireland use 00353…

    One additional observation:

When I changed the dial patterns from “XX.” to “.XX.” I could go back to prefexing the number with the plus. (I suspect that this
pattern would shunt everything to this trunk).

    Regards,
    Mike.

mikeh | 8:35 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  74. Hi Pasha,

Ok I think that I have come up with a dialing pattern that
is equivalent to yours but also allows + (plus) to be used:

    [+0-9]X.

    Regards,
    Mike.

  75. Hi Pasha,

A question re Gizmo and PBX. I am not sure why I need to have both, can you please explain. I thought that I would just have to register with a SIP provider, like http://www.sipme.com.au in Australia. Why do I need to have two providers?

BTW I cant get my E61 working with SIPME.COM>AU so just tryingto understand what I am missing.

    Many thanks

  81. Hi
This is an excellent tutorial, thanks!!
I managed to register successfully, and when I dialled *43, it works. But with whatever number I dial for land lines, the “address not in use” error pops out (and I do not hear anything on the phone). I have $10 in Gizmo. I tried all of the following and they did NOT work for me:
    1. Remove the plus sign
    2. insert 0, or 00

I am sorry but could someone help me out? The country code in Singapore (where I live) is 65, and telephone numbers are 8 digits long (no area code). So what should I dial?

Appreciate any help from gurus out there. :) THANKS!!

  82. I got this working, no problem! I tried with setting my access point to GPRS, but when I try to dial the E61 complains that there is no suitible WLAN found, so it expects wireless to do internet calls.

Have you found a way to call other gizmo users, or even find out if a gizmo user is online? Thanks for this tutorial, I hope to get an asterisk box setup and replicate this on my own system if I can figure it out :)

  83. @weesen
try dialing some of the SIP test #s mentioned in the comments. like these:
    1-747-474-ECHO
1-747-474-3246 OR Gizmo Project welcome recording 1-747-474-5000.

also try dialing out usually u don’t need your own country code when u dial internationally. so try dialing a US or EU # and see. try dialing 800 or 877 #s they are free. just try different sets and experiment. and also make sure if still no luck that you have changed your trunk username to your sip # in pbxes, etc.

  85. Thanks Bro for your suggestions. This is what I’ve tried and their results:

Hear your SIP number repeated back to you. ** — Invalid Internet Call addrees
Test your router’s compatibility. *0 — >Address not in use
Echo Test - Repeats back whatever you say. 1-747-474-ECHO
1-747-474-3246 –> Address not in use
Gizmo Project welcome recording 1-747-474-5000 — >Address not in use
University of California San Diego Campus 1-858-534-3400(Test) — > Address not in use
University of California Irvine Campus 1-949-824-5414(Test) — > Address not in use
Santa Cruz Campus 1-831-459-4357 –> Address not in use

Sigh. The only number I could call and get a response (everytime) is *43. I’ve also changed the trunk username to the sip# in pbxes.

Am very keen to get it to work, but it seems now that it is not quite possible. Will ask gizmo to refund my credits…

  91. Hey tstaylor

That box on pbxes only goes green when you phone registers - so you haven’t really narrowed it, other than to show that the problem is still on the phone.

Quadruple check the case of everything, the prefixes/suffixes and that you have used your gizmo number not your user name.

I’m registered, just cant seem to work out the right number combination or the XX. thing in PBXES

  95. Hi, nice article. I’ve written similar instructions to configure a free SIP account with an italian voip service provider: Abbeyphone (www.abbeyphone.com). Registering and PC-PC calls are free, and if you want you can buy credit and place international PSTN and mobile calls.
You can find the instructions here: http://the-presence-of-presence.blogspot.com/2006/09/sip-on-nokia-e61-it-works.html

  97. Hi all,

am based in SG, just like weesen earlier. Got to the stage of being able to dial *43. Tried everything else and still not able to dial out. Quite at a loss. Read in Gizmo website that if we were to dial international calls, we have to do it as if we are in US. Tried that method as well, and did not work.

Sigh…would welcome further advice on this.

Batman | 1:17 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  98. @lacruise
i lived in the UAE and i had similiar problem. i solved it by finding proxy servers and accessing any site through a proxy server. all you need is to access gizmodo once to set it all up.

    @berto
i believe i had the same problem as you man. please go over all my posts to see how i resolved it. it ended up being a switch of my gizmo username to it’s sip# equivalent on the pbxes site.

    @tstaylor
if you can’t see your phone registering, the problem is still at the handset level not pbxes. you must be able to register your phone with the wifi connection at the very minimum. try going back to the sip setup and choosing ‘whene is needed’ instead of ‘always on’ and just play around those settings. but it must register before you can do anything. try to see if you can surf the web first. if so, then just hit your menue button (DO NOT hit the red button or exit the web browser that would sever your wifi connection, just hit the menu button). i’ve found sometimes doing this will keep the wifi active long enough for the registration to activate.

  100. Pasha,
Looks like you promised long time ago to write an article on how to setup routes so pbxes can decide wich service to use. I can’t find this article. this article is all i need to make my voipcheap.com work.

    Pasha
    Aug 23rd, 2006 at 12:01 pm
Ok, finally someone had successfully set it up! I’m happy.

    to Stephen,

Now To make your voipcheap.com work you need to setup routes so pbxes can decide which service to use.

For now you may control “outbounding routes” with “Dial Patterns”. this parameters selects wich route to use. I will write a new article on this one tommorow.

Dimilaz | 6:35 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  101. This is quite amazing. Followed the instruction, including some notes in the blog, works great…. as an FYI in Singapore to dial overseas from the mobile phone use 00 (zero -zero) plus country code.

I am a little confused at the charges that Gizmo is charging. It says 1.5cUS$ per minute, but my charges for a couple of calls to UK of 1 plus minute was almost $4.00. What am I doing wrong?

    Cheers Roy

  104. Thank you Santosh for your tip on Aug 25th, 2006. Somehow I cant set up my secondary account/agent in GIZMO for PBXES.

    I used these settings…

    Server: 217.195.32.11
    Name: my-pbxes-login
    Password: my-pbxes-password

    I get this message…

    Secondary Failure.
    Error connecting to Server. (Timeout).
Reason: The client never got the REGISTERED event.

Anyone have advice experience with this?

MIkko | 2:55 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  105. Mikko, I have the exact same problem with my secondary agent in GIZMO. I have tried several times to no avail. Everytime I try to register on the e61 I get registration failed. I tried a new service from http://www.tivi.com that uses it own program on the e61 so you don’t have to use Nokia’s SIP client. It looked like it was going to be great but when I put in the account info I set up online it said “registration failed, connection timed out” and this was after only 15 or 20 seconds. I tried both GPRS and WIFI connections that I use everyday so I know they work. I suspect this connection timed out problem is the reason my GIZMO/pbxes setup fails as well. Anyone have any ideas?

  106. Is anybody made this work using Cingular in the US? I think my problem might be with my provider.

keatisk | 9:39 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  107. I followed the instructions. However, when I am in pbxex Status, both the extension and the trunk show in green but the extension is deemed. When I click on the help is says it’s unregistered.

I followed the instrutions to the dot. I even created new accounts and tried it all over again. Same result.

    Thoughts?

Ofer | 3:40 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  108. I use Cingular and this is working for me.
Your providers should not matter, since you’re accessing this via WiFi.

Also, the only error I had was due to me not clicking the red bar in pbxes to “apply” the changes.

Now if I could only find a svc like gizmo for free…

Keith | 6:25 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  109. Does the 2.XX firmware update make this article obsolete, or is NAT traversal still not fixed?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave | 7:12 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  110. The new firmware does not solve the NAT issue. I have a question for Keith - Do you have the secondary log-in on Gizmo working or can that be skipped. I can’t get that to work.

keatisk | 3:02 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  111. @keatisk
your service provider should have nothing to do with making SIP calls, as you’re routing through the phone’s WiFi which is why most people opt for buying the e61, the WAN capability with wifi. if you’re trying to use GPRS to make sip calls, then that’s a different issue, you may have to use proxy. but first try to make wifi work as per this guide/comments b4 introducing more complicated variables in there.

    @Dave
new firmware makes no changes to the NAT as far as I know, that being said, NAT should not affect the SIP call process as per pasha’s guide. I myself thought my problems were due to NAT traversal at first, but they’re not. If you can get your e61’s WiFi to access the internet you should have NO issues with NAT for SIP setup either. if you have problems (assuming WiFi works), it’s not nat, it’s something else going on there.

i have cingular in the usa w/ mediaNet package (the $19.99 unlimited data w/ video and 200 free SMS/month). everything works perfectly fine….sometimes they won’t let you access google.com because they have exclusive contract with yahoo. but 99% of sites load ok. you can always use twingine.com or something to search google as well.
make sure you get all the settings sent to your (SMS from nokia) thru nokia’s website. you can autosave the various cingular settings to your phone and pick the one that works for you. i use Cingular Express settings. but you’ll have to see what’s best in your area cingular express/cing. internet/cing ISP/Internet GPRS/etc/etc. you’ll have all these settings sent to you by putting your cell # in nokia’s site. forgot the actual webpage for that…anyone who knows please post. but it’s in a few posts on nokme if you search….

I had spent the last few days tyring to get my E61 to register.I have followed everything there is to follow in this thread. When I call *43, all I get is ‘Requesting registration’ as I have put registration as ‘When needed’ I takes about 3-4mins and then it says ‘Internet telephone service not available ‘. I’m using wifi at office, I can ping, from my PC, 217.195.32.11, so it’s not firewall. And I’ve ensure my Wifi is connected all the time by checking ‘ConnectionMgr>Active Connection. On the PBXES.org site, it shows me all the right colours.I have ensure I put my Gizmo SIP numbers not username.Passwords are all correct. My OS is the 2.06 version, latest just downloaded from Nokia Europe.I’ve removed SIP from proxy and registrar username, so its username-100 (the dash is the minus sign on my qwerty keyboard. So what else. I tried at home, no firewall and now office, still no luck. Sad week. Please Gods of VOIP, help me even if there’s alot of lost souls already asking for help.

  120. I have used all the great knowledge from this forum and applied it to setup my Nokia E70. I’m using Teliax.com along with pbxes. I got green on my status in pbxes and calls I’ve made are being listed on Teliax.com. The thing is when I make the calls on my Nokia the voice of woman saying “try you call again later” keeps coming up. I’ve tried calling the number with in front or just 001 then the area code and just the 1 and area code. It seems everything is working but just cannot complete the call. Any ideas? Thanks.

  121. Hi Pasha,
Great Blog, went through the steps, just as you have them down, removed the sip: in steps 2C and 3C in the phone setup, defined the access point, restarted my phone, and everything works just fine.
I do however have another question. Can I get Internet Calls to work on my T Mobile Edge Internet Connection? Or can I only make VOIP calls where there is Wifi?
Also, are there any other cool applications that you might suggest.
    Sincerely,
    Asaif

Asaif | 2:21 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  122. Also, everytime I leave my home, the Internet Call icon disappears, obviously, because there probably is no wifi. And, I have to restart my phone when I get back home, in order to get the icon to reappear. Is there any way around this. Also, as I mentioned in the previous post, I do subscribe to T Mobile’s Total Internet Service in Atlanta, GA, USA which has an Edge connection. Is there a way for me to be able to make VOIP calls where I am, even if there is no WIFI access.
    Thanks.

  124. Greetings from Sunny South-Africa!

I’m blind but, absolutely love the e61.
I’m using a speech application on it that enables me to use the phone to it’s fullest potential.

Firstly, if you want a free landline that will divert to your sip account for free, just hop over to http://www.ipkall.com/
PS: register with your correct email address and in a few minutes you’ll receive a mail with your new telephone number.

As far as I know, they only provide numbers for the u.s.

    It’s working great for me.

    ****
I’ve got sip accounts with http://www.terrasip.com/ and http://www.freeworlddialup.com/ and for those who has a problem with the firewall issue, TerraSip has a stun server.

And perhaps a little off-topic but, none the less beneficial, I hope:

For those of you who don’t have the e61 yet but, has a simbian phone like any of the below, read on.

Here are the phones that are compatible.
    Nokia:

    Asus:
    MYPAL A716

    Motorola:

    Samsung:
    SCH-i730

just go to http://www.tivi.com/mobile/manufacturer.php from your pc or http://m.tivi.com/ from your device and download TiviPhone.
Oh, you can register for a tivi account at http://www.tivi.com/

You’ll be able to call other tivi users on either gprs, 3g or other data networks.
There is also a version available for the pc so, you can call other tivi users who have tivi running on their pc’s from your phone.

Tivi phone and chat program for the pc can be downloaded from http://www.tivi.com/download/download.php

Take care and have a lovely day further.

macalex | 6:45 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  127. Younis, It will only connect via Wifi, not GPRS. To make Internet calls, you have to have a Wifi Connection, you won’t be able to connect through your GPRS Internet Plan.

  143. I think perhaps I made a big mistake. I have been using Gizmo and Truphone on my e61 and they both have been working great. Today I updated the firmware to the very newest version, 3.0——–. Now both gizmo and Truphone have stopped working. They will both register and appear to be working but when I try to make a call it will not connect. The number shows on the screen followed by the gizmo number or the @truphone.com but nothing else happens. It will just sit until I cancel it. The service stays registered but when I try to make a call again the same thing happens. I know the new firmware not supports NAT and I wonder if that is now a problem. I just couldn’t leave well enough alone. Any ideas?

    HI,
I noted that that the phone does not allow me to select an access point using IP-Passthrough, for the SIP-client. (I had never tried this with the older FW, now I have the latest -3.0633.09.04 -is this restriction something newly introduced?)

Any hints or experiences? How to remove the barrier? I truly would like to run VoIP over E61 the data cable, through my “IP-connected laptop” when travelling and buying data access for the PC?

  147. I have successfully configured my E61 to work on:

    VOIPCHEAP
    SIPPHONE
    VOICESTICK
    CALLWITHUS
    PBXES.ORG
    TRUPHONE

The one thing to remember is that sometimes these services mysteriously don’t work for a while and then they work. The biggest issue I found is that even if you have Always Register selected, you will see its connected but the service may not receive incoming calls unless you reconnect the service. This is particularly true of Voicestick.

In my opinion TRUPHONE is totally hyped. All the download does is set up some settings very similar to what has been described in this post, except they try to make it “idiot proof”. After seeing all the hoopla at their website and their ridiculous way to sign up..ie send a text message using a GSM cell phone in order to get the URL that installs the TRUPHONE wizard that just sets the SIP settings is stupid.

I mean the whole point of setting up SIP with E61 is so that you don’t HAVE to have a cell phone service.

My recommendations at this point are:

    1) SIPPHONE since it works reliably most of the time. The only issues is that you need to pay for the callin number if you want phone callers to reach you like a normal phone.
The free 775 number has its own hassles, I have the problem where it goes into voicemail before I can pick it up.

2)CALLWITHUS, this service I just signed up today, they give you a DID for 4 USD with a 2 USD setup fee 1 USD for voicemail per month. You just have to put some money into an account via paypal and they debit your account based on your usage. Very competitive rates to India and other countries, but slighly expensive within the USA 0.013 (Sipphone is 0.010). I think this is a very small scale operation.

    3) VOICESTICK, get a free DID in the USA where you live and just pay as you go, no monthly charge for a DID. Only problem is that it loses registration after an hour. You can make outgoing calls, but you have to make your Nokia reregister to get incoming calls. It has free voicemail like SIPPHONE.

    4) VOIPCHEAP. This is great for making free calls to many places including within the USA. The big problem is that you dont have a DID and callerid will show unknown, which means not a lot of people in the USA will pick up their phones. Competitive rates to many countries.

    5) TRUPHONE. Gives you a 360 area code. Not worth the trouble in my opinion. Overhyped company without that much substance.

Hope some of this was useful. I spent a LOT of time figuring out this VOIP stuff with Nokia and with my Grandstream 286 adapter.

  148. Hi all,

I’d just like to thank Pasha, and verify that the above works, behind a corporate firewall and with firmware 3.0xxx.

The ‘ ‘ dialing prefix for international calls doesn’t work for me, though; use 00.

    Thanks again! :)

erikm | 2:51 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  149. Eh, that is, a (plus sign) dialing prefix that doesn’t work in my previous post. The plus does not show up in my browser…

  150. Hello!

I bought a Nokia E70 phone. I have Wi-Fi connection, and I’m trying to use it with voipcheap.com. I have registered, and I can use my account from computer, but when I try to use it from the phone, it cannot be registered. I have read all the replies in this topic, but here is as many information as I can’t use in the same time.

Would anyone please let me know step by step the setup parameters of the E70 with voipcheap.com account?

    Thanks a lot!

  151. Wow, this has got to be one of the most cool tutorials for E61. Thanks to it, I got internet telephony working in my new E61 in 30 mins flat…everything went well (just remember not to put sip: in user names)….(and my E61 is on V3 firmware)…thanks again.

So now what….in order to keep using it what do I do .. buy credit at Gizmo?

DDGuy | 8:28 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  152. Wow, tkank you. I don’t have any idea why and how it works, but I call EU2USA via internet from my E61.

    I tried http://support.gizmoproject.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=207,
which is quiet understandable, but it simply wasn’t able to registrate.

your method is much more complicated, but it works, which is the most important parameter.

    Thank you

  159. Hi All!
I followed Pasha’s instruction to set sipphone on my E70.
    It works very well. Great!
    Thx from Japan

  160. Would like to add my thanks for the PBXes tip..

I had been unable to register Ideasip on my E61 until pointed to this page. Sipphone was registered on my E61 already, but I followed your instructions to the ‘t’ before trying Ideasip.

That worked fine, so I tried adding a -200 extension for Ideasip, but there was a conflict.. I removed Sipphone from pbxes therefore, and just used the Ideasip settings. Changed my E61 PBXes setup, and it came straight up! :-D

Now I would like to find out what more I can do with PBXes

    Many thanks
    Mvh

  161. Hello, I’m regeistered on e61 - last firmware - with sipphone but I cannot receive calls. The caller receives the message “Unable to complete call”. It is the same if I’m connected with GPRS or WLAN. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  162. does sip registration have to be throught the wifi connection? can it be done with 3G? has anyone got voip to work over 3G - is it laggy?
also is it possible to be registered with more than one sip proxy at the same time?

terry | 4:43 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  163. My E61 is working fine with Gizmo, VOIPBuster and VoipTalk.

The only one I am having trouble with is Wengo.

Does anyone have any working Wengo settings they could share?

What about Yahoo Voice, anyone got that going?

    Cheers,

Chris | 7:36 pm on the 15th of August, 2006

  164. Terry,

My E61 is constantly registered with three different sip services with no problems at all. I am using WiFi so far have not tried with 3G, but my broadband is via a satellite connection which usually adds some lag, but I am very impressed with the sip call quality using ViopTalk & Gizmo.

Its just the Wengo account I cant get to register for some reason.

  166. Hi Pasha,

I bought my new E70 two months ago and now I am discovering this usefull (and cheap) manner of making phone calls.

Following your tutorial…if I have another voip line (like that from voipbusterpro or truephone or in my country, vono), I just assign other name like sipphone2 (at item 2a), my sip number and password (itens 2b and 2c) and sip server name like: proxy01.sipphone2.com and at trunk sequence (item 5c) I choose a priority for outgoing that it will works fine ?

Or I need to configure some more things ?

If someone could help I will appreciate too.

    Thanks.

  167. hi CHRIS / Pasha

  168. Hi

I can’t really get E61 (firmware 3) to use SIP.
I can register fine and I see the earth icon.
When I try to make call and select internet call, the number stays there and nothing happens. I don’t even see any packets going out either.

I have another E61 with firmware 2 and it works fine with same settings.

I have tried deleting all profiles on firmware 3 E61 but still calls dont work.

One thing I must mentions is that I am using it with asterisk and I see STUN Binding messages going to asterisk server (where there is no STUN server running).

keatisk: did you find a solution for that?

Tili | 9:01 am on the 15th of August, 2006

  169. Issue resolved.

OK I got that issue resolved by creating another internet profile Default(01) and adding the SIP profile to it.

Then in Internet Tel. in Installation folder, I only asked to connect to Default(01) and after login, I was able to make both inbound and outbound calls.

I guess deleting Default Internet Profile and creating again wud help too.

  170. Pasha, thanks for this good information. I guess I am having the registration failure issue as well. I have tried everything and I do get green dots unders status for pbxes.org.

Interesting thing is I start with browrwing using my wlan and it works and then every time I try to register it fails and kills my wlan, which I need to reboot to further make it work. I am thinking there is something potentially wrong with my wlan settings.

has anyone experienced this issue before. thanks much….Jaat

  172. well I don’t know why someus have problems, by I bought this phone today, 5 March 2007. It has 1.xxxxxx Firmware version, dated beginning of 2006. About all this have to say that I just used sip of local Georgian Net provider, and my WLAN was behind 2 NATs, besides of all this it worked perfectly. I don’t think to upgrade the Firmware, because this version does everithing I need.

P.S Have one question, what is the maximum length your phone works (meaning WiFi at least B 22MB/ps)? My frient tald me that his Nokia E70 withe 2.xxxx Firmvare version works only 15 Meters not more from his WiFi access point more than 15 Meter signal is lost. In my case I used to work more than 25 Meters, in not open area space.
