E61 Not Charging
I have this problem with my E61 “not charging”. When I plug the phone into the charger, it’ll charge for a little while–30 seconds to 10 minutes–and then beep and say “Not charging.” If I unplug and replug the charger, then it’ll charge for a little while longer, but I have to keep doing it over and over again to get a full charge. I also try using Nokia Car charger to charge the phone and I still get “not charging” message in 10-30 seconds. Did anyone of you ever experience this? And how do you solve the problem? I know I am not the only on ever experience this. I am sure lots of folks would really appreciate you sharing your solutions. Nokia USA is not offering any help because the phone is not supported in US. Nokia UK cannot help either becasue I am in US. I am disappointed with Nokia support.
Nokia makes phones that work all over the world; too bad they don’t have an international warrenty…

I have had this problem but it was related to my AC Adaptor/Charger. Some chargers I’ve had from previous Nokia phones will not charge my e61 - for the most part they are 110v only chargers. My e61 will only work on chargers that are both 110v and 220v chargers. Not sure why…

I have also experienced this problem with one of the two chargers that I have for the E61. The original charger that came with it would do the same as what you wrote. The other one (which came with a Nokia bluetooth headset) works perfectly fine.
I had found that sometimes the following trick would work. Power off your phone. Plug in the charger. Wait until it starts charging, then power the phone back on. In my experience, most of the time it would then charge normally.
My E61 has been bought in Asia.

I actually had the same problems starting a week ago, just after updating to the latest firmware. It drove me mad that evening; my phone is very important to my work. I finally was able to charge it when I powered down the phone. I hope this is a software glitch the’ll fix with the next firmware.

when I use third party chargers output 5.0V 500ma, i get the problem.
when i use the nokia 100-240V 895ma charger the problem is not there.
I can only suspect that the E61 is drawing to much current on initial
connection and getting confused when it cant get enough current.
Therefore if you use a nokia charger u might try the 895ma output chargers.
Also my cheap chinese charger 220V only 450ma works ok.
again no idea why. I just think they might have added some changes
to make us use only nokia 100-240V chargers or the more modern chargers.
just a guess.

I have had this problem too. I think it is related to which charger you initially use when charging the E61. In other words, I had no problems with charging when I used the charger that came with the E61, but when I started to use a different charger at a different output I have a problem. It is possible that this is a built in safety function so you do not accidentally fry you E61 by charging it too fast with a charger that has a higher output.

Hi! Believe it or not, I had the exact same problem with a charger to a totally different device- a Sirius Stiletto. After it had been plugged in for awhile, it would only charge intermittently (it would charge for 30 secs then not charge for 30 secs). Take comfort in knowing that the problem lies not in your pricey device, but in the charger itself. My dad’s an electrician, and he seemed to believe it was a problem with the cold soldering inside the black charger plug. Long story short, I replaced the charger, and the Stiletto worked fine..

I bought my E61 in November and suffered from the same problems you say you are experincing.
I will tell you now, without a shadow of a doubt, that the fault lies in your charger and not your phone. The new style Nokia charger, with the exceptionally fine connector, also appears to use an exceptionally fine cable. This cable is prone to breaking either at the phone connector itself or at the wall socket end.
The reason that it works when you unplug and plug it back in again is that you will be moving the cable *ever so slightly*, renewing the connection. It’s a real pain.
So far, I’ve been throught two genuine Nokia chargers in this respect and almost all of my friends who own the same charger report the same problems after a couple of months. My eventual solution was to purchase a third party charger from Carphone Warehouse, which has a significantly more substansial cable.
This is such a failing on Nokia’s part. They appear to be refusing acknowledgement of the problem, and their old style charger was internationally renowned as a “brick” that just kept on working. Up until last year, five, six year old chargers would still work perfectly fine with the new phones. Nokia’s decision to redesign the charger has been a engineering and design nightmare.

@Kian Ryan: Excuse me to say so, but this is totally FALSE! If there would be a connection Issue at the cable and / or the powerconnector on the phone you would be able to recognize the phone evantually charging, stop charging, charge etc. (Like would a normal phone when you pull and re insert the plug - NO MESSAGE)
But when “Not charging” appears in the display, the phones charging controller (a µC managing LI-ION / LI-Poly Charge Cycles) tells the phone that something is wrong (like insufficent Voltage and or current)
I had this issue with my E61. It would not charge / display “not charging” with its original AC Adaptor but with an old 6310i “ACP-12E” it would. The old charger uses a higher voltage (5.7V).
Nokia Service told me that the charging controller is damaged!

i had the same problem. tried different chargers, different batteries, firmware upgrade, phone default reset etc. etc.
then in the end I called in the warranty and after 30 days they gave me a brand new e61. saying they could not fix it.
so my advice is go to the store you’ve bought the device and try to get a replacement piece. in my case it was not a charger problem, cause w/ the new e61 I got, im using the old chargers I’ve used w/ the damaged device…
no idea, in my ipinion it’s a hardware bug that occurs in some weird cases.
good luck

i bought a car charger for my nokia 6234 (i think), and it only charges my phone for a few seconds when i plug it in initially and if i want it to stay charging i have to bend the wire back which would suggest a problem in the cable. however it used to work nicely until i messed with my car radio. i dunno but im getting pretty fed up with the new cheap nokias.

I have a 6233 and I’ve not been able to get an exchange yet for a new one, even 9 weeks on, I’ve been told that their is a problem with the supply.

Thanks guy’s. My real worry is over! This nokia charger is only giving an output of 3.7v = / 355ma. No wonder it wont charge!! Thanks to you all…Jay.

Do you guys have any clue why Nokia changed their charger? I believe there must be some non-technical issue here.
donkei | 4:54 am on the 18th of January, 2007
after 14 weeks of refusing to by a replacement charger i now have. The shop is having to replace them with stock of the shelf and will be taking up the problem with nokia them selfs. never had a problem with nokia, unlike some other make that i wont mention but it looks like nokia has messed up big style hear. good job i had old nokia spare.

I’m off to buy my 3rd Nokia (new design) charger and in my case, it definitely is a case of the cable getting damaged inside the moulding at the plug end as pointed out by Kian Ryan. That must be why they sell it with a velcro cable tie so that you can loop up the cable when not using the charger. Most of us just wrap the cable round the plug and in the case of the Nokia charger, this seems to put enough tension on the cable to break it.
Will find a 3rd party charger this time.

I got the same problem with my new n95, saying ‘ Not Charging’ when I plug the charger. I don’t think it’s the problem with the charger (works well on other n95); other chargers also don’t work on this faulty n95. It may be the charging controller of this phone is damaged. Is there any other method to fix that by ourselves other than send back? I signed from O2-UK. Is it better send to O2 or to Nokia directly?
Many thanks,all

I am having problems with the Fine connector pins that Nokia ac 4 u offers. The Connector Pin does not have enough mechanical strength and bends very easily. I am amazed how a company like nokia can approve such poor quality design
