Call Skype with your Nokia E61 and even more

SoonR - Make Skype calls, Remote Desktop

Today I would like to tell you about awesome service I had found. It is called “SoonR” it lets you do wonderful things all you need is WEB enabled phone.

SoonR Preferences

First thing you should install “SoonR Desktop Agent” there are two types for WinXP and Mac OS X!!! It is required because you will access your computer thrue your phone. While installing agent it will ask you to register on there website it is needed for collecting your data and presenting it on WEB.
This is how SoonR looks on my Nokia E61:

SoonR Main Screen

Here is what you can do:
1. Browse, download any files with your phone from your computer (Windows or Mac OS X)
2. Make Skype calls (basicly it works as if you requested a call it will dial your mobile phone number and number you requested then it will connect you like a conference call). Easy and amazing.
3. Organizer. I haven’t used it yet.
4. Search. In my case, I use Mac so it is “Spotlight”! If you on PC you will use Google Desktop.

SoonR Desktop

Imagine you are on a meeting and you forgot presentation file or some important data. Not a problem any more you just need your Phone with GPRS, WEB browser & SoonR and you can find, download or request the file to be sent on email, simple.

SoonR Spotlight

Now you can save money on mobile calls you can use Skype. If you do use SIP now it’s cool but imagine that you out of WiFi coverage but you want a cheap call use SoonR, you can get full Skype address book and Skype chat and dial any number. You will receive a callback with dialed number, simple =)

SoonR Skype

Important thing “SoonR” is a free service. It has much more cool features I will try to write about it more deeply.

  2. Thx, You should definitely try it, they done a lot of work! =)

Going to write about SIP (VOIP) experience a lot of wonderful thing I had discovered on this the e61 phone is the best thing I had!

Btw, just today I had tried SonyEricsson P990i they did well but still misses some software like SIP etc…and the price is too much $1100 for P990i comparing $450 for e61. And yes I don’t use Phone Camera…

  5. Your hint might be very helpful to me. But i did not understand how Skype will be accessed : Do you need a running computer making and receiving calls with Skype? If yes, what is so great with SoonR? It would be great using Skype without having computer running. Thanks for your answere!

Horst | 2:27 pm on the 12th of August, 2006

  6. Horst, Yes you need a runnig computer which is working like a host for you, all the commands are sent thru the WEB browser.

The great thing about the SoonR not only Skype function but also remote control of your computer from elsewhere like file access, etc…

Pasha | 4:35 pm on the 12th of August, 2006

  7. @Pasha/all
doesn’t this create a huge lagtime, let’s say you’re using e61 via WLAN or even 3G netwk. Skype by itself has a bit of a lag on intl calls. How is quality of voice/lagtime with this kind of SoonR remote control setup?

  8. Has anyone tried using skypeOut or skypeIn with this nokia e61 SoonR setup or any other type of setup?

is there any direct way of using a skype client on the nokia e61? anything in the works perhaps?

    thanks

    bro D | 1:59 pm on the 12th of August, 2006

  9. to b,

Of course there is a lag time, but I tried and made international calls, I must say lag time is not so big, you may talk without pauses…

    to bro D,

Yes, you can use skypeIN without any software just set a redirection to your mobile in Skype.

with SoonR you can you SkypeOUT easy.

And there is NO Skype client for Nokia or any Symbian phone, yet…

George | 3:03 am on the 12th of August, 2006

  11. The skype issues with Symbian was the only thing holding me back (for reasons unknown even to me) but it seems i have no excuse NOT to buy this phone

    Cheers

sleyyum | 7:23 am on the 12th of August, 2006

  24. You just mention the Nokia E61. Can you also use the Nokia 6136 in the same way?

Jafeya | 5:39 am on the 12th of August, 2006

  25. I’ll watch it for some time.

Though it is a good service, but the risk also increases as you have to fully trust the hosts and you have to store your sensitive information at their server.

also notice another service that can help to synchronize your google calender with your E61’s calender, you must disclose your google account (with password) to it. I would rather be more cautious..

The problem is how to protect the privacy when we day-by-day rely more on the Internet.. I think it will be a tough challenge.

  26. very disapointed with my e61, symbian is a nightmare. no skype (proper)I had an mda II from tmobile and this worked great I can set alarms for meetings to remind me say for 30,40 minutes, 1day etc. Repeat alarm for waking up to with the e61 I have to set it up everyday. Calendar is reasonable. All Excel spreadsheets are useless can’t do autosum.
The good point is that I can use the web wiressly. It would be the best phone if it run on windows. Sorry

carlos | 4:33 pm on the 12th of August, 2006

  27. The program is AMAAAAAAZINNNGGGGg
    REAly great.

  33. Trying to us Skype on your Phone via SoonR sucks!! Rather use iSkoot.

SoonR requires a PC with a life internet connection for the duration of your phone call to Skype, plus the PC must be running SoonR. - You might aswell use Skype directly from the PC.

Wayne | 5:49 am on the 12th of August, 2006

  34. Iskoot looks cool, however you still need to pay a circuit switch call, so if you intend to use it in countries where iSkoot doesn’t have a server inplace, you will have to pay an international call the fee for SkypeOut.
So it sill doesn’t seem the right solution to use as a VoIP client over your Packet Connection straight from the E61… (and take advantage of its Wlan feature)…. If I am wrong please correct me…. Cheers

bafio | 6:43 am on the 12th of August, 2006

  35. Hi bafio

Yes you are correct - None of these two options are perfect.

Can’t wait for Skype symbian so that i can use skype on my nokia E61.

Wayne | 1:34 am on the 12th of August, 2006

  36. anyone tried PRING?

    http://www.pring.com

suppose to be able to call Skype without any PC running

Alp | 4:09 pm on the 12th of August, 2006

  37. Hi there,

@Alp: You probably mean http://www.fring.com! This is quite a good piece of software for the e61.

This software supports SKYPE, Google Talk, MSN Messanger and the Fring Talk Service itself. I am just using Skype - you may talk and chat. The only thing I am missing is the option to change your status but they are working on it.

Fring even lets you use your WLAN Conection!

I would say http://www.fring.com and http://www.nav4all.com are right now my favorite pieces of software for the e61.

    Greetings

  38. ok… but it doesn’t avoid ROAMING charges :-( I’m looking for a skype able phone to bypass horendous roaming charges when I go abroad.
Unfortunately the solution described here (skypeOut from your PC and conferencing you in to) means that skype is going to call my number in my “homeland” and I’ll still be slapped with a huge roaming bill while the call is routed abroad.
    Or am I wrong ?

bevan | 8:04 am on the 12th of August, 2006

  39. Well it has taken me 3 months of troubleshooting but i’ve cracked it.
I am now running skype “iSkoot” and Gizmoproject on my Nokia E65. 3 months ago i bought the Nokia N80, what a terrible phone! bad design, bad build quality and maybe i was unlucky but my model was broken/faulty from day one, anyhow I basically wanted a mobile and skype phone in one for my long distance calling. I found out just before xmas that the N80 internet edition would have internet calling capabilities with the use of Gizmo http://gizmovoip.com/learn/ over Wi Fi. I bought the phone and apart from the fact that it was broken and i began to hate the design, the voip calling was great and quite clear. However the phone was still faulty so I changed it for the new and absolutely wonderful E65. This phone was the answer to all my problems with the N80, it’s as if Nokia listened to my complaints and punched out a new model for me in 2 months. I give the N80 2 out of 10 and the E65 a 9.5! Anyhow here’s what i have now: http://www.iskoot.com/ with Nokia E61 download option, which works perfectly on the E65 and the gizmoproject with N80 download option, also working well. So there you have it if you want a skype mobile then look no further that the E65 and with all the Hotspots around Helsinki including my office and home WLAN my phone bill’s have been carved not to mention never having to pay for a long distance call to Australia again or need to sit by my computer.
